As you gain knowledge you realize it is best to approach individual objects separately, rather than trying to "blend them" in you should try to manipulate one at a time, taking care that you follow a wholesome color and style theme for the whole piece. This gives you much more possibilities. In the long-run thats the optimal approach, just a bit of advice

yes, for example in this case you would first work on background and apply a wholesome manipulation to it until it's just right, then on the persons you want to add, making sure you use same approach (coloring, shading, whatever you apply to it) as you did with the background, so that it then "blends in" once you add it to the whole picture.
